There is nothing I like more than a holiday in the sun. There is something about heading down south after a busy couple of months that keeps me focused all year round. Although I have a long list of favorite sunny destinations, Mexico is one that continues to top the list. I am not sure if it is the easy access to flights or that it is almost guaranteed to have beautiful weather, it always feels like the best decision!
When searching online for the perfect first stop of our travels, Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa immediately caught my eye. This luxury Riviera Maya resort had every amenity you could think of but still had a sense of intimacy and uniqueness. On top of that, it is part of the Belmond brand ….. which is always an experience that never disappoints!
As we entered Belmond Maroma’s breathtaking grounds, I couldn’t help but think their property was the perfect mix between jungle and beach. It never crossed my mind that both of these locations could be mixed so perfectly. Our room was situated at the edge of the property with breathtaking views of the ocean in front. Everyday, Paul and I would wake up to enjoy a morning coffee (that just happened to be waiting by our door) to take in the views before us .
If there is one thing I can appreciate about a holiday is the food. There is nothing I crave more, the moment I land on the Mexican soil, than tacos and margaritas. Often resorts aren’t known to be able to compete with where the locals dine but I can confidently confirm that the options available at Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa are just that …. the real deal.
Our favorite restaurant, for both breakfast and dinner, was El Restaurante. This beachside option was the perfect place to start our day each morning. We enjoyed freshly squeezed juices, pastries and handmade tortillas that were made fresh in front of our very eyes. I still dream of their perfected breakfast on the daily.
I’ve said it time and time again here on the blog, I am the happiest by the ocean. I know that I am not alone in this thought… I mean who doesn’t love a beach day, especially in another country? However, for me, I feel the most like myself when I am near (or on) the ocean and away from the constant stress of city life. I am not sure if it was because I spent most of my childhood on the ocean sailing or if it is that I really value piece and quiet …..whenever I am near the ocean (regardless of the location) I feel at home.
The beach at Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa couldn’t have felt more like home. The privacy of their beach is what made this property so unique to other resorts in Mexico. Although there are resorts down the beach from the Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa, you can’t see or hear these other properties. If you have visited the east coast of Mexico before you know that this is a commodity.
Although I can say I am quite content laying out for most of the day, I can also appreciate a water sport from time to time. The Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa has such a wide range of adventures to embark on that you would never have to do the same thing twice. As Paul and I met sailing, we decided the Hobie Cat was an obvious first choice. Other adventures offered (and yes we tried them all) include kayaking, denote snorkelling, bike tours and and visiting the Mayan ruins.
Although all of the above were special elements to our holiday, the one that topped them all (and then some) was Freddy’s Bar. You make be thinking, really? a bar? If you have visited Freddy’s (yes Freddy is actually there daily) then you know too well how this beach bar is truly the gem of the resort.
The food is great, the drinks are even better but what makes this bar so special is the atmosphere. Freddy is a character (and those who know me know I LOVE a personality) and he truly makes this bar feel relaxed as if you were in the comfort of your own home (if only I had margaritas flowing at my actual home…what a dream it would be).
After a long day at the beach, I love to jump in the pool to cool off one last time. The pools at the Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa are surrounded by lush greenery that adds another element to the holiday ….a jungle vibe. What was so perfect about their resort was that you could also get Freddy’s delivered pool side. Can I say WIN! WIN!
Finally, the last but certainly not least favorite aspect of our holiday at the Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa was their authentic Mayan Spa. We enjoyed morning yoga. fresh smoothies and were treated to an array of transitional massages. There was no better way, in my opinion, then to finish off a already relaxing vacation feeling more relaxed!
Thank you to the entire team at Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa for one of my favorite holidays to date!
